Kang Qiyuan: Reflecting on a Shared Future Across Different Landscapes

— A Young Explorer Extending Environmental Reflection from Qinling to Western Sichuan

In late summer 2025, in Western Sichuan, snow-capped mountains, vast alpine grasslands, and winding rivers formed a landscape both magnificent and fragile. For 17-year-old Kang Qiyuan, this journey was more than travel — it was an extension of environmental reflection that began in the Qinling Mountains and expanded into a broader ecological perspective.

Extending Reflections Beyond the Qinling Mountains

His prior participation in the Qinling low-carbon forum helped Kang develop a systematic understanding of regional ecology — recognizing that environmental strategies cannot be universally applied, as landscapes, climates, and human activities vary significantly.

With this in mind, Kang began his journey to Western Sichuan with a central question:

If the environmental approaches learned in Qinling were applied elsewhere, would they still work?

Understanding a Different Ecological Logic on the Plateau

While in Western Sichuan, Kang observed that ecological priorities differed from those in Qinling. Instead of forest-centered conservation, the region focuses more on grassland ecosystems, yak grazing, and the balance between human livelihood and traditional culture.

Through conversations with local residents and guides, Kang learned that environmental initiatives must align with plateau lifestyles — otherwise, even well-intentioned efforts may fail to last.

“True sustainability only exists when the people who live here are part of the solution.”

This was a sentence he noted repeatedly in his travel journal.

From Low-Carbon Awareness to Place-Based Conservation

If Qinling introduced Kang to the universal value of low-carbon living, Western Sichuan taught him that environmental protection also requires place-based wisdom.

在秦岭,是减少人为干扰、守护生态屏障;

He reflected on how different regions could design realistic conservation approaches based on local conditions —

In Qinling, minimizing human disturbance to protect ecological barriers;

In Western Sichuan, respecting natural rhythms and sustaining long-term human–nature cooperation.

The Role of Youth: Bridging Understanding and Action

Rather than approaching Western Sichuan as a casual traveler, Kang documented, compared, and reflected throughout the journey. By linking his observations to discussions from the Qinling forum, he developed a more multidimensional understanding of environmental protection.

He came to believe that the role of young people is not to immediately provide answers, but to ask better questions —

How can shared environmental values be built across regions?

And how can differences be respected rather than overridden?

A Commitment to Ongoing Exploration

Though separated in time, Kang’s experiences in Qinling and Western Sichuan formed a coherent intellectual journey. He realized that environmental protection is not a single event, but a long-term path requiring continuous learning, observation, and adaptation.

Looking ahead, Kang hopes to integrate environmental issues with studies in sociology, geography, and public policy — developing a more structured understanding of the human–nature relationship.

Seeking Answers Between Mountains

As the journey ended and the mountains faded into the distance, Kang carried with him not just photographs, but a more mature ecological awareness.

From the forests of Qinling to the plateaus of Western Sichuan, Kang learned to view the same question through different lenses —

How can we protect enduring natural values in a changing world?

And perhaps it is this ability to reflect, extend, and grow that marks the true beginning of his environmental journey.
