Zijia He: Reading Nature’s Changes Along the Coastline Through Mathematics

— An Environmental Reflection Beginning with Coastal Observation

July 2026, Xi’an — A photograph taken on a hillside by the sea captures sunlight across the water, green vegetation stretching along the slope, and a road winding through the landscape. For Zijia He, the view became more than a travel memory; it became a starting point for reconsidering the relationship between people and nature. With a long-standing interest in mathematics, patterns, and data, he began to ask whether subtle environmental changes could be recognized through more careful observation—and how young people could turn environmental awareness into consistent action.

From Scenery to Questions: Seeing the Complexity Behind a Peaceful View

From a distance, the coastline, road, and hillside appear to exist in balance. Transportation makes nature more accessible, while urban development and tourism bring convenience to daily life. Yet that convenience is not without cost. Vehicle emissions, energy use, litter, and disturbance to coastal vegetation can gradually reshape the surrounding ecosystem.

Zijia realized that many environmental problems do not appear suddenly or dramatically. They are often dispersed through ordinary life, difficult to notice in the short term, yet increasingly significant as their effects accumulate. Meaningful environmental observation therefore requires more than admiring a view. It also requires asking how that landscape was shaped and what forms of human pressure it may be carrying.

A Mathematical Lens: Using Data to Recognize Gradual Change

Mathematical thinking has trained Zijia to look for connections within information that may initially seem scattered. To him, environmental protection is not an abstract slogan. Ocean temperature, air quality, energy use, waste production, and changes in animal populations can all be better understood through sustained records and comparison.

A single day of unusual weather cannot explain a long-term trend, and one beach cleanup can remove only the waste that is immediately visible. When temperature changes are tracked over time, and the sources, types, and quantities of litter are recorded, isolated observations can begin to reveal patterns and support more effective solutions.

Data cannot replace action, but it can make overlooked changes easier to recognize. For Zijia, the value of mathematics is not limited to finding an answer. It also helps people ask more precise questions and identify a direction for action within complex information.

Everyday Choices: Making Environmental Responsibility a Consistent Habit

Zijia does not believe environmental responsibility must begin with a large project. Reducing disposable products, saving water and electricity, leaving no waste in natural areas, respecting marked trails, protecting vegetation, and learning about local ecosystems before traveling are all practical choices an individual can make.

These actions may seem small, but their value lies in being repeated. Environmental protection is not a moment of enthusiasm; it is built through long-term, steady decisions that people are willing to maintain. When more individuals make such changes in daily life, personal choices can grow into broader social influence.

Youth Responsibility: Moving from Attention to Understanding and Action

This moment on the coastline also led Zijia to reconsider the relationship between appreciating nature and protecting it. When people admire the scale of the ocean, the green hillside, and the sunlight across the water, they should also consider what must be done so that future generations can experience the same view.

In the future, he hopes to continue exploring the connections between mathematics, data, and environmental protection. He understands that one person cannot solve a major environmental problem alone, but everyone can begin by observing carefully, understanding evidence, analyzing causes rationally, and taking responsibility through concrete choices.

Epilogue: Turning a Moment of Attention into Long-Term Action

Beginning with a single photograph of the coast, Zijia did not arrive at a grand conclusion. Instead, he experienced a more meaningful shift in perspective: nature is not merely scenery to be viewed, but a shared environment that must be understood, respected, and protected over time. When mathematical thinking helps reveal change and everyday choices make responsibility concrete, “seeing” becomes more than a visual experience—it becomes the first step toward action.

The environmental strength of young people does not always come from the loudest statement. It can grow from curiosity, respect for evidence, and long-term consistency. This careful way of seeing the world may continue to accompany Zijia into new fields of study and wider environments, helping him seek rational, practical, and sustainable responses to the ecological challenges of our time.
